In Quebec, spring brings its share of changes... and one of the most important for homeowners is the melting of the snow. Even though it heralds the return of good weather, it can pose a real challenge for your septic system.

In this article, we explain why melting snow can harm your septic tank—and, more importantly, what you can do to avoid unpleasant surprises.

1. Waterlogged soil = slow drainage

In spring, accumulated snow melts quickly and seeps into the ground. The result? The ground around your septic systems becomes waterlogged.

When the soil is too wet, it absorbs wastewater from your septic tank less well, which can lead to:

  • Excessive accumulation in the tank

  • A slowdown in drainage

  • Risk of backflow inside the building.

2. Risk of septic tank overflow

Rapid snowmelt can cause an overflow , as the system no longer has the capacity to receive new wastewater. This can cause:

  • Unpleasant odors around the house

  • Puddles of standing water near the drain field and covers.

  • Possible contamination of the soil or nearby wells

3. How to properly prepare your system before the rainy season

Here are some simple things you can do in spring to avoid problems associated with heavy rainfall :

  • Have your septic tank emptied if it has been more than 2 years (or 4 years if it is seasonal).

  • Avoid running multiple water appliances at the same time (e.g. washing machine + shower + dishwasher).

  • Redirect gutters away from your drain field.

  • Limit the movement of vehicles or machinery on the ground above the field to avoid soil compaction.

  • Clean the filter.
